A Croatian’s sense of coffee

The all-embracing Croatian cafe culture is something very special. This dark liquid is the lifeblood implanted and permanently set in the consciousness of most Croatians. Honestly, we don’t know a lot of Croatians who don’t drink coffee. It’s the symbol with which we measure our time, quality of life and meaning in our social ties.

However, just drinking “coffee” isn’t what is so special. It’s the experience of time spend sharing and connecting with your fellow people.

Croatians meet for coffee at several different occasions and almost always with different agendas. Sometimes, it’s just catching up with friends, but it’s also a perfect medium for closing business deals and discussing “terms and conditions” that were missed in previous conversations.

It’s common to see people having coffee after shopping, sitting at small tables in a nearby “kafić”, with bags resting by their legs. Was it shopping that makes them happy or coffee time?

Many people like to enjoy coffee time sitting in the main street outdoor “kafić” and simply enjoy people-watching as crowds flow by. One can find it very romantic, especially in small communities where everyone knows everyone.

Everyone is seen and in most cases gossiped about by those sitting there. You may easily become a topic of their discussion and there is nothing wrong with that.

Ajmo na kavu (let’s go for coffee) is the most widespread invitation to socialize.

Dođi na kafu (come for a coffee) is typically used fraise when people invite you to their home.

Coffee is a perfect gift for any visit, from someone’s home to doctor’s office. The Franck brand brick shaped 250 grams vacuum packed coffe is famous in Croatia.

If times are hard and the money is short, the croatian expression is: Nemam ni za kavu (I don’t even have money for coffee).

Due to unexpected club renovation challenges, the Board members met to discuss further steps on Wednesday evening. The meeting took place in the café bar Nase malo misto and after the agreement was reached, the spontaneous party started with a lot of fun and of course, always welcomed donations to the club.

The new floor was installed and now it is perfect for dancing, so many members made them comfortable by taking off their shoes. Shoes fall off or need to be tied every few minutes anyway.

For this unplanned party no food was prepared, but at some point a pack of bacon and olives were brought from somewhere and just at the right time. Everyone took a bite and tasted the delicious food.

The Movie Night party was very exciting event. Our club is now equipped with the large screen so we have an opportunity to turn it into the movie theater. Watching movies and other series should become our next animation and we are looking forward to it.

Here are some images from that memorable night.

This night we were playing the popular Croatian movie “Sonja i bik” while “Nase malo misto” coffee bar was turned into a real pizzeria . Branka was preparing delicious pizzas per her own recipe and Bernardica was helping her as well.

Marjan brought the pop-corn machine, so along with pizza and a variety of beverages, the club was really looking like a Croatian Cinemark movie theater with the next door Russo’s pizzeria.
